लगभग दो सौ वर्ष पूर्व राजा कृष्णचन्द्र ने बंगाल के एक भाग पर शासन करते थे। गोपाल भांड उनके दरबारी विदूषक थे। हालाँकि गोपाल भांड ने किताबों का अध्ययन नहीं किया था, फिर भी वे बहुत बुद्धिमान थे। एक बार दरबार में एक अत्यंत विद्वान व्यक्ति महाज्ञानी पंडित आये। वे सभी भारतीय भाषाएँ अच्छी तरह से और धाराप्रवाह से बोलते थे। उन्हें दर्शन एवं धर्म का अच्छा ज्ञान था। उन्होंने सभी सवालों का जवाब बहुत समझदारी से दिया. लोग उनसे बात करके आश्चर्यचकित थे लेकिन कोई भी उनकी मातृभाषा को नहीं पहचान सका। जब भी लोग उससे पूछते, वह अहंकारपूर्वक मुस्कुरा देता। उन्होंने कहा, एक सच्चा बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति आसानी से मेरी मातृभाषा जान लेगा। राजा कृष्णचन्द्र बहुत परेशान थे। इसलिए उन्होंने पंडित की मातृभाषा बताने वाले को इनाम देने की घोषणा की।
सभी विद्वानों ने महाज्ञानी की बात ध्यान से सुनी। लेकिन कोई भी उसकी मातृभाषा नहीं पहचान सका। “तुम्हें शर्म आनी चाहिए”, राजा ने गुस्से से कहा। सभी विद्वान चुप थे. गोपाल भांड सकपका कर खड़ा हो गया. उन्होंने कहा, महाराज, मुझे एक मौका दीजिए।“आप कैसे बता सकते हैं?”, राजा ने पूछा। महाराज ! मैं बात नहीं करूंगा. वह आपको खुद बता देंगे”, गोपाल भांड ने उत्तर दिया। अगली सुबह राजा अपने बगीचे में घूम रहा था। गोपाल भांड तेजी से उनके पास दौड़े और बोले, मैने महाज्ञानी पंडित से कहा है कि आप उन्हें गुलाब की माला से सम्मानित करने जा रहे हैं।“क्या!”, राजा ने आश्चर्य से कहा। अगले ही क्षण राजा ने महाज्ञानी पंडित को ब्रेसब्री में आते देखा। वह रेशमी वस्त्रों में था। गोपाल भांड बाड़े के पीछे छिप गया। जैसे ही पंडित बाड़े के पास आया, उसने अपना पैर बाहर निकाला और पंडित को ठोकर मार दी। महाज्ञानी पंडित ताजे पानी वाली जमीन पर गिर पड़े। वह उठ बैठा और गोपाल भांड पर अपनी मातृभाषा में चिल्लाने लगा। गोपाल भांड ने कहा, “महाराज, अब आप जान गए हैं कि पंडित की मातृभाषा क्या है!”महाज्ञानी पंडित उठे और गोपाल भांड से बोले, “अरे बुद्धिमान, तुमने मुझे बड़ी बुद्धिमानी से फँसाया है,” और वह चले गये।
